using mainly knowledge passed down through generations, the polynesian people would navigate across a large portion of the pacific ocean in search of a new land. the risks of such a voyage were high but the rewards were so great it was worth it to many polynesians. approximately 1,500 years they set sail in canoes from the marquesas islands and were the first people to set foot on the hawaiian islands. records from this era are non-existent, but you can imagine there were a lot of deaths along the way. this voyage was ripe with danger including high winds, big waves, and lack of clean water and food. on the open ocean it is possible to procure some amount of food through fishing and catching birds. unfortunately, due to the fact your on a small canoe it would be nearly impossible to cook and process the food. procuring clean water on the other hand was near impossible. surrounded by the mighty pacific ocean for over 2,000 miles in every direction these mighty sailors ran off faith and ancenstorial knowledge alone to reach their destination. the dates that the first settlers reach the hawaiian islands are highly debated amongst researchers. the primary method for calculating these dates have to do with carbon dating technologies. the range of possible settlements dates stretches from 300 ad to 1,200 ad and everything in-between. truth be told there’s really no way we can know for sure. fortunately for us, the history of polynesians was passed down their ceremony and oral chants at yearly function, which provides us with some data and clues. in reality, the exact date the island was first inhabited will probably never be known. the hawaiian people were a sailing people and their voyages from tahiti to hawaii will remain one of the great mysteries of this planet. can you imagine setting sailing from your without knowing for sure if you would reach your destination or not? without fancy gps systems or compasses, these ancient water men had only folk lore and the stars to guide them along their way. it’s important that all modern sailors remember where the roots of sailing originated and respect those that came before us. sailing accross the pacific ocean sailing the pacific ocean the origins of the pacific islanders have always been a subject that interested me greatly. as a sailing fanatic and lover of the island lifestyle i have done a lot of research on these amazing people. i just finished reading the book kon-tiki by thor heyerdahl. this epic tale details one mans search to discover the origins of the polynesian people. prior to his research and voyage in 1947, it was commonly assumed that the polynesian people started their ocean voyage from africa. the prevailing winds and currents blow from east to west, therefore we know the earliest pacific islanders must have sailed from that direction, but it has never been known for sure where they originated. after decades of research, thor heyerdahl decided to arrange a ocean voyage and prove the origin of the polynesian people. this voyage would take place on a traditional polynesian craft and rely only on wind and the currents to reach it’s destination. the journey would take months and came with a heavy risks, but the lure was too great for thor to pass up. early research had assumed that natives watched the flight paths of birds migrating to provide the clues that land did exist one quarter of the way across the world, but they had no assurances until they actually made the trip. the exact time frame when the first islanders reached polynesia is unknown, but carbon dating has provided us with some clues. in total, it took thor and his crew of seamen 3 months to reach the shores of polynesia from south america. this experimental voyage proved that not only was such a journey possible, but that history books could possibly be wrong about the origins of the pacific islanders. during the trip there were many hardships along the way. in fact, spending that much time in the ocean with only a few people and little to no entertainment can get the best of even the most disciplined person. plus, the food and water situation becomes questionable after just a few weeks. at times the crew utilized rain catchment systems to add to their water reserves. three months on the water is a long time and eventually food will become scarce. when your stuck in the middle of the pacific ocean you only have so many options to procure food. the most obvious choice is to catch fish with either a fishing pole or a net. another not so obvious option is to use different systems to catch birds. even out in the middle of the ocean birds can be found, and they are usually drawn to the boat because it’s a great place for them to rest their wings. using this to your advantage, one can procure a good amount of food in this fashion. in the end, the kon-tiki voyage was a huge success that changed history forever. the information gained on this trip proved that it’s very possible that the polynesian people originally came from south america, and not africa as previously thought. if you trace them from their original roots, you can assume two possible migration routes. the pacific islanders more than likely walked up through russia, across the land bridge to alaska, down through the united states, mexico, and eventually setting sailing for the south pacific from chile. of course this is just speculation, but history shows us that this is the most obvious possibility. if your looking for a great book about the polynesian people, sailing, and history then read kon-tiki by thor neyerdahl. how to become a better sailor do you want to become a better sailor? in this article i will explain that there is an exact science to improving your skills and mastering the sport. for me, sailing has been a part of my life for as long as i can remember. when i was younger my parents were avid sailors and took me on trips out on the columbia river where we lived. our home in st. helens oregon was the perfect jump off point to the columbia river, the willamette river, and pacific ocean. since i was young i’ve loved the feeling of being out on the water with the wind at my back and the sun in my face. sailing is like anything else in the fact that the more you do it the more comfortable you become. as a lifelong sailor, i no longer get the butterflies and fears that someone new to the lifestyle would experience. for some, setting out into any body of water with nothing but a sail instills a large amount of fear in them. as you become more proficient in your ability to navigate, the fears you orig
